Bamboo is a relatively new category within the woodworking industry. Botanically, bamboo is not a wood but a collective term for a group of large grass species. Recent estimates indicate there are approximately 1,600 different species of bamboo, though not all are suitable for producing bamboo wood. Only giant bamboo species, such as Moso bamboo, are used for this purpose.
The most widely used species, Phyllostachys Pubescens (commonly known as 'Moso bamboo'), is native to China and can grow up to 20 meters in height with a diameter of 10–12 cm. MOSO® bamboo wood is manufactured in facilities located near the mountains and plantations where Moso bamboo is cultivated.
What Type of Material is Bamboo?
Bamboo is neither a hardwood nor a softwood. It is technically a grass, specifically giant Moso bamboo. When the bamboo stem reaches maturity—meaning its cellulose is fully developed, making it firm and hard—it is harvested. Unlike tree trunks, bamboo stems are hollow and cannot be directly sawn into planks. Instead, they are cut and split into strips. These strips are then bonded together to form solid panels or beams suitable for various applications, much like conventional wood.
Is Bamboo Wood Sustainable?

It grows rapidly, often in degraded or less fertile soils where other crops struggle, and absorbs significant amounts of CO₂ during its growth. Additionally, bamboo products have a long service life, comparable to that of traditional wood. It is susceptible to insect attacks after cutting and should undergo immunization and drying processes.
